Apothecary Ornament (2006)
This ornament depicts the facade of the Apothecary, at 105-107 S. Fairfax Street. The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum was a family business founded in 1792 by Edward Stabler which operated in this location from 1805 until 1933. It represents one of Alexandria's oldest continuously run family businesses that combined retailing, wholesaling, and manufacturing, managed by the Stablers and the Leadbeaters. Products included pharmaceutical items such as tinctures, elixirs, potions, talcs, lotions, syrups, and teas, but also paint, cleaning products, food items, wines and confections. At its peak, the business utilized eleven local buildings. As a museum today, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum offers a look at this unique family enterprise and the life of the Apothecary's employees and customers.
