Lyceum Ornament (2013)
The 2013 Historic Alexandria Ornament is the Lyceum. In 1839, the Alexandria Library Company & the Alexandria Lyceum joined their resources to construct this classic Greek Revival structure that both could share.Reading rooms on the first floor held the Library’s collection, while the Lyceum offered lectures & concerts to its members on the second floor.During the Civil War, occupying Union forces seized the building & turned it into a hospital ward, serving both Union and captured Confederate wounded.Turned into a private home after the war, the building now known simply as The Lyceum was saved from demolition by City Council in 1969, to be renovated into the nation’s first Bicentennial Center.Today, The Lyceum is Alexandria’s general city history museum.
